Beanie Babies infected with spider eggs?

The Internet has been plagued with rumours that baby spiders are hatching from decades old collectible Beanie Babies, which – as it turns out – were the nesting place for their eggs over the last 20 or so years.

The rumours lead back to an article on Clickhole that claimed the popular 90s toys “have served as protective sacs for the spider eggs they harbor, providing a warm, dark atmosphere for the arthropods to pass through their larval stages.” The article claims the spiders are the dangerous Brown Recluse spider.

However the article is fake. Clickhole is a cousin website to The Onion satire site, and is a parody website that prints fanciful stories that should not be taken seriously. However the popularity of this article has led to rumours that the story may be true.

Of course the story is totally nonsense. There is no known species that would take 20+ years for their eggs to hatch and the assertion that Beanie Babies manufacturer Ty laced their toys with spider eggs is of course ridiculous.

It is likely that people spreading the rumours did not read the entire Clickhole article which is clearly designed to be a humour article.
