Is FEMA looking to hire 1000 people on $2000 a week contract? Fact check
In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, messages are spreading on social media that claim FEMA are looking to hire 1000 members of the public and will pay $2000 per week plus expenses.
According to the message, interested applicants can apply by calling a provided number and asking for a Mr. Adrian Davis.
Examples of this message are below –
FEMA is looking to hire help. $2000 per week plus expenses. 90 days or longer they need over 1000 people. Cannot have any felonies. 888- 776-1296. Mr. Adrian Davis

The rumours are false. None of the information presented in the rumour is accurate, and is possibly the result of spammy text messages sent to recipients over SMS in what would likely be a scam attempting to elicit personal information from unwitting victims. The phone number provided is not related to FEMA.

FEMA has confirmed via their website that the message is false –
Rumor: There are reports stating FEMA is looking to employ 1,000 people offering to pay $2,000/week for 90 days and the phone number to call is 888-776-1296.
This report is FALSE. (August 29)
If you do get a text message from this number, it is important to ignore it.
On a sidenote, FEMA were looking for Field Inspectors in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey – however this doesn’t appear to be related to this online rumour since the phone number and salary are different and it is limited to those with a pre-existing contract with FEMA. Additionally, applications for these posts are no longer being accepted.
