Don’t be fooled by Facebook ‘Year in Review 2016’ scams

Our readers should be on the lookout for any number of scams trying to trick you into sharing like-farming posts or installing rogue Facebook apps to get your Facebook ‘Year in Review 2016’ video.

Each year, in the last few weeks of December, Facebook allows you to watch your ‘Year in Review’ featuring a collection of your most popular posts and photos of the last 12 months, no doubt all accompanied to some uplifting beats.

However Facebook spammers are trying to trick users into believing they can get their Year in Review by luring users into liking a Facebook page and sharing a post. See the post below, for example.

4 steps to get your Year in Review Video.
step 1 : like this page..
Step 2 : Share this post.
Step 3 : Comment ” Thanks ” below….
Step 4 : Request video here https://www.facebook.com/yearinreview

While Facebook’s “Year in Review” feature is real, these posts and apps are NOT. These Facebook posts are simply trying to lure Facebook members into following them. You do not need to like a page, share or comment on a post in order to get your ‘Year in Review’ video.

Scammers may also try and trick you into installing rogue Facebook apps to try and get your ‘Year in Review’ video. Again, you do not need to install any Facebook apps to get this video. The same applies to any other type of software, plugin, codec or extension that scammers may try and lure you into installing.

Such ‘Year in Review’ videos will automatically be previewed in your newsfeed and you will be notified when they are ready. Alternatively you can go to the web address facebook.com/yearinreview. At the time of writing, these videos are not ready yet, since it is too early in December.

Don’t fall for like-farming pages trying to lure you into following them. Facebook members who do follow such pages increase their chances of being exposed to spam or more sinister scams if they choose to follow such pages.
