Google release most searched for trends of 2016 – what was number 1?

The Internet’s largest search engine, Google, has just released its annual list of the top ten trends that people have been searching for over the last 12 months.

The question on everyone’s mind is – what took the coveted number one spot?

Despite the surge in media coverage over the latter part of the year given to the problem of fake news, we were disappointed to see that it didn’t make an appearance, though admittedly that was always going to be pretty unlikely.

So what managed to find its way into the top ten global trends that people searched for in 2016?

If you said Donald Trump, and we wouldn’t have blamed you if you did, you’d be wrong. The President-elect took the number 3 spot.

The deaths of both Prince and David Bowie both gave them top ten spots, but neither took the top spot, ranking at 4 and 6 respectively.

Okay, it’s time for the big reveal. The number one spot, by – from what we understand was quite a margin – was the mobile app Pokemon Go.

The mobile app game that broke several records in 2016 also topped the list of “How to” (“how to play Pokemon Go”) searches and “What is” (“What is Pokemon Go”) searches too.

The top ten UK trending searches were –

So it appears the Brits were slightly more concerned with the dismal performance of the national football (soccer) team than with the viral app.

Down under, and Euro 2016 curiously got a place in Australia’s top ten searches and US Election actually topped the list, with Pokemon Go getting a measly sixth place –
