A running list of the fake photos & videos of Ukraine flooding social media

While the Russian invasion of Ukraine is certainly most real and we’ll all no doubt be inundated with horrific photos and videos showing the consequences of that conflict, there is still plenty of fake content spreading on social media that we should not be sharing.

Here is some of the misinformation.

Explosion at Luhansk power plant set off by Russian airstrike?

This video claims to show the aftermath of a Russian airstrike on a Ukrainian power plant.

FALSE. This video really shows an explosion in China in 2015. See this article on Stuff.

Russian Paratroopers Landing in Ukraine?

The below video claims to show paratroopers landing in Kharkov, Ukraine. The video was even reported on by India News.

FALSE. The video really shows Russian training exercises in Vostok in 2018.

Ukrainian Christians praying?

A photo allegedly shows Christians praying in the snow in Ukraine amid (or immediately prior to) the Russian invasion.

OUTDATED. Despite the photo being linked to the 2022 Russian invasion, it actually dates back to 2019.

Russian Warplanes Avoiding Anti-Aircraft Fire

The below video claims to show Russian warplanes facing anti-aircraft fire.

FALSE. The video is from a video game called ARMA 3. There are a number of very similar videos available showing the same game and same graphics available on YouTube.
