Angelina Jolie scam suicide video links spreading on Facebook

Links are spreading on Facebook that claim actress Angelina Jolie has committed suicide and left behind a video saying goodbye to her fans.

The links – one of which you can see below – purport to show Jolie’s “goodbye video” and implore you to click the link to watch. Various versions of the links exist.

Firstly, the links are fake. Angelina Jolie has not committed suicide. She is alive and well at the time of writing.

The links are using fake “entertainment news” to lure social media users into clicking links that lead to an array of dangerous or spammy websites. On the various examples of this link we’ve seen, the links directed us to external webpages which in turn directed us to the installation pages of various spammy Facebook apps.

If we were to install such apps – which were disguised as legitimate apps like CNN – they would almost certainly proceed to post the same spammy links from our accounts, thus spreading them to our own Facebook contacts.

The same spammers were recently behind similar scams that claimed Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carrey and Jaden Smith had also died.

It is important that Facebook users avoid clicking such spammy links on their Facebook newsfeeds, and if you do, NEVER install any software or Facebook apps in order to watch video or read any “breaking news” as this puts your computer security at risk.

If you clicking the link and allowed a Facebook app to install and this has led to you posting spammy links from your account, make sure you go to your Facebook settings, select Apps and remove any suspicious or unknown apps.
