ASDA giving 7.5% discount to refugees? Fact Check

Rumours are spreading online that Asda has announced a new policy whereas refugees in the United Kingdom will get a 7.5% discount on shopping in their stores from August 1st 2017.

The story appears to have originated from a website called AltRightRedPill.xyz that published the following headline – 7.5% DISCOUNT FOR ALL REFUGEES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AT ASDA AS OF AUGUST 1ST 2017.

However the story does not appear to be based in truth.

There has been no mention of such a policy on any of Asda’s press release channels or social media pages or elsewhere on the Internet, including no reports from mainstream media. Internet searches reveal absolutely no results, which there inevitably would be if this was indeed announced by the supermarket brand.

Additionally, the website that published the story cited no sources or evidence to corroborate the baseless claims. In fact the website – an “alternative news” site called AltRightRedPill.xyz – is one of many websites that publishes a variety of fake news intermixed with politically skewed articles ever since it was created in 2017.

Another fake news story published by the same website claimed that Punxsutawney Phil – the weather foretelling groundhog from Pennsylvania – referred to anti-Trump supporters as “libtards” during its annual weather forecast. That fake news story was directly swiped from another fake news site called NationalReport.net.

Since there is no evidence to corroborate the article in question and the website is known to publish fake news, it is clear there is no reason to believe the claims made in the article. It is another example of fake news.

Nevertheless we’ve reached out to Asda for comment.
