UK far right party Britain First have shared a popular hoax only hours after we re-posted a link debunking it onto our Facebook page.
The claim that pensioners of a specific country get less money in benefits than “refugees and illegal immigrants” has long been a popular type of right-wing rhetoric with no actual basis in reality.
Versions exist for many countries including the UK, the United States and Australia, and the benefit amounts quoted in each version of the hoax appear to be simply made up. We fully debunk this popular rumour here.
We posted that same link to our Facebook page less than 24 hours from the time we are writing this, and only a matter of hours later, the social media admins of Britain First opted to republish the same hoax, claiming that British pensioners receive significantly less in benefits that those who illegally migrate to the country as well as refugees.
Whether it was a coincidence, we do not know. But what is clear is that Britain First have no concern with what is true and what is false, providing it fits in with their prejudiced and dogmatic propaganda.
They have posted this popular hoax from their Facebook page before, and it was thoroughly debunked back then. However, the fact that they continue to publish demonstrably false information from their Facebook page demonstrates that they cannot be considered a reliable source for accurate information.

We're hoping to be totally ad-free by 2025 - after all, no one likes online adverts, and all they do is get in the way and slow everything down. But of course we still have fees and costs to pay, so please, please consider becoming a Facebook supporter! It costs only 0.99p (~$1.30) a month (you can stop at any time) and ensures we can still keep posting Cybersecurity themed content to help keep our communities safe and scam-free.
