CELEBRITY has this to say about residents of TOWN hoaxes spread
The fake news industry is at it again with a brand new wave of fake news stories designed to trick people into visiting their webpages and reading their spoof articles, this time by claiming that various celebrities had something nice to say about the residents of a specific town.
Both the celebrity and the town name vary, depending on what variant you read and on what website you read it. The fake stories all claim that a specific celebrity has said that the residents of a specific town are “nice” after helping them fix a flat tire. The articles are currently all using the same template. A recent example claims Matthew McConaughey said the residents of Lubbock, Texas are nice, and that article reads –
Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey passed through Lubbock, Texas recently and apparently was quite impressed with the residents there. In an interview this week McConaughey said:
“Well, we had a flat tire just as we were about to leave the city limits of Lubbock and two, maybe three cars pulled over within five minutes to help us with it. And no, they had no idea who I was before they pulled over. They were very helpful and very friendly. I gotta say, I was really impressed with the people of Lubbock, Texas! That would’ve never happened in L.A.!”
Matthew’s vehicle was back on the road within a short period of time. What a great testament to the residents of Lubbock!
Other examples simply replace the celebrity name and place name with alternatives.
These spoof articles prove highly popular since they target specific places with seemingly local stories that are shared by people living in the locations which each article mentions. This works in a similar fashion to a recent spate of fake articles claiming that specific celebrities were moving to specific locations across the United States.
In fact it is the same network of spoof websites publishing these stories. Sites like KNP7.com, WCPM3.com and KUPR7.com, amongst several others, all owned by the same people, publishing these fake articles, often several each every day.
