Did KFC tweet photo of drumstick with clenched fist shadow? Fact Check

Messages on Twitter claim that KFC celebrated the end of Black History Month by publishing an image of a chicken drumstick casting a shadow of the clenched symbol that is often associated with civil rights movements.

MOSTLY FALSE

An example of the claim is below.

What’s true?
This image was once posted by a regional KFC account.

What’s false?
The image was never posted by the main KFC (@KFC) Twitter account. The screenshot of the tweet above has been manipulated. Additionally it was never posted with the hashtag #BlackHistoryMonth.

In reality the image was tweeted by the KFC account of Trinidad & Tobago in 2020 on Emancipation Day, a public holiday that marks the end of slavery. The tweet garnered public criticism and the KFC account later removed the tweet and apologised.
