Did Obama say “If we don’t do something about this president, I will” at DNC fundraiser? Fact Check

Rumours online claim that former US President Barack Obama said “If we don’t do something about this president, I will” at a DNC fundraiser.

Many of those spreading the rumour via social media and forums claim that the quote represents a direct threat to the sitting US President.

However the claim is unproven and likely false. It is true that Barack Obama did attend a DNC fundraiser on June 28th at Beverly Hills. However there are no reputable reports from anyone who attended that state or imply that Obama made such a comment, nor has any proof been offered to support the claim.

While we were not able to obtain a full transcript, the fundraiser was covered by media outlets from both sides of the political aisle, including FOX News. However no reports have surfaced that Obama had made such a remark, and no one that attended the event has offered any sort of evidence (a video recording, for example) that support the claims.

The claim appears to be circulating from people who did not attend the event, who are only passing on the information from others who have made the same claim online.

It is possible, perhaps, the comment was a poor paraphrasing of a remark made by Obama that, through the process of online Chinese Whispers, transformed into a bona-fide verbatim comment uttered by the former president when that almost certainly appears not to be the case.

Unless someone spreading this claim can verify it with proof, this claim remains unsubstantiated, likely false.
