Fact Check

Did Queen call Trump “amazing person” during an interview? Fact Check

Memes are spreading online that claim that Queen Elizabeth gave a now suppressed interview in which she stated – among other things – that President Trump was an “amazing person” and “in another life, could have been her son”.

FALSE

Memes likes the one below are spreading online following the US President’s state visit to the UK in June 2019.

He’s really just an amazing person. So thoughtful, you know. We’ve had some private talks and he is very genuine. I have a sense about people, and the president has a good heart. In another life, he could be my son.

The above memes and its attached quote began spreading online shortly after the president’s trip to the UK, France and Ireland which coincided with D-Day anniversary commemorations.

Most frequently the quote is attached to a photo of the president and the Queen sitting next together smiling.

The quote was given added context by websites such as The Clover Chronicle that claimed the quote was made during an interview with an unnamed media outlet from the UK which was subsequently “supressed” because the Queen praised the president too frequently, including giving the quote above. From that article –

Was just involved in an exclusive interview with the Queen, but the execs at my company decided not to air it because she praised Trump so f**king much. It was literally impossible to edit and not make it look like total garbage.

It is perhaps of little surprise – especially to those familiar with the Queens speaking style – that the quote above and the claim that her interview with an unnamed UK media outlet are false. The notion that the Queen would claim that anyone “could be her son in a different life” as well as conversational speaking style mannerisms such as adding “you know” after an assertion are clear indicators that the quote was thought up by someone other than Her Majesty.

Of course the story was always doubtful since the Queen does not give interviews to media outlets, and is well-known for not taking sides on the political spectrum.

A quick Internet search reveals that the Clover Chronicle story may have been based on a post from the prolific /pol (politics) section of the 4Chan website, a source known to churn out many examples of misinformation that duly spreads online. It is possible, given the ridiculous nature of the quote above, that the original author may have intended for their post to be taken with more than just a pinch of salt.

A contact from the media inquiries team from Buckingham Palace told us simply that the Queen “does not give interviews”” when we asked about the story and quote above.

Given the prosperous nature of the quote and lack of corresponding evidence, we rate this claim false.
