Did The Simpsons predict Trump would try and buy Greenland? Fact Check

Rumours on social media claim that The Simpsons predicted that Donald Trump would attempt to purchase Greenland.

FALSE

Over the years, animated series The Simpsons has gained a reputation of being somewhat of a Nostradamus when it comes predicting the future. An old episode did, after all, predict that Donald Trump would become president.

However, many rumours have been embellished to make them appear more impressive than they are (like the Trump example or the Lady Gaga Superbowl claim) or are just false, like the Notre Dame fire claim.

And the claim that The Simpsons predicted that Trump would try and purchase Greenland is another plain false claim. There are no episodes that match that description. It may have started after Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn) penned a tweet claiming the CNN headline about the genuine story of Trump cancelling a trip to Denmark after they rejected the notion of the US acquiring Greenland was in a 1995 episode of The Simpsons.

It wasn’t, and it’s not likely that Murphy was being serious, rather he was just poking fun at The Simpsons’ reputation (mostly unearned) of predicting future events. However many took the rumours seriously with many taking to social media sites to question the veracity of the claim.
