Did Trump declare October 4th “Bring Your Bible to School Day”? Fact Check

Rumours online claim that President Trump has declared October 4th to be “Bring Your Bible to School Day“, a day where students across the United States are encouraged to bring their own copies of the Bible to school.

An example of the rumour as it appeared on social media can be seen below –

President Trump is making Oct 4th bring your Bible to school day. I pray that every school in America is full of Bibles that day.

Despite claims made in these headlines, President Trump has not declared October 4th to be “Bring Your Bible to School Day”, since this is an existing annual celebration that has been running for a number of years (before Trump took office.) It isn’t officially supported or sanctioned by the White House or the Federal Government.

In fact the event was created the a large conservative Christian group called Focus on the Family, and the voluntary annual event even has its own website that reads –

Welcome to Bring Your Bible to School Day! On this day — happening this year on October 4 — thousands of students across the whole country share God’s hope and celebrate religious freedom by doing something simple, yet powerful: They bring their Bibles to school and talk about it with friends!

In 2017, the day was held on October 5th and an estimated 500,000 students took part. The event has been running since 2014.

As such, the day is very much real. But this isn’t something that has been organised or sanctioned by the government or indeed President Trump. The day has not been officially declared by the White House.
