Fact Check

Did Trump tweet confederate flag was symbol of love? Fact Check

A tweet apparently authored by Donald Trump claimed the US President described the Confederate Flag as a “symbol of love” and that plantations kept black people employed.

FALSE

An example of a screenshot of the tweet can be seen below.

SO MAD!!! Pentagon abolished Confederate flag today. The flag is TREMENDOUS part of our history. It’s a symbol of LOVE!! Plantations kept black people employed and gave them free food and housing!!! Black unemployment was VERY low back then like now with ME as your President!!

However the tweet is false. There is no record of this tweet on the president’s timeline, nor does it appear in the archive services that list all of the president’s tweets, even if they have been subsequently removed by Twitter or the president himself.

This appears to be one of many fake tweet screenshots that have been made by any of a variety of free “fake tweet” tools on the Internet.

As such, we rank this claim false.
