Does a photo show litter in aftermath of protest in Clermont, Australia – Fact Check
A photo showing rubbish strewn across grass is being spread on social media claiming that it shows the aftermath of a pro-environmentalist protest in Clermont, Queensland in Australia.
FALSE
The photo has previously spread across social media claiming it was the aftermath of an Extinction Rebellion pro-environmental protest in London. This was also false.
While the photo does indeed show Hyde Park in London (not Hyde Park in Leeds as claimed by some) it was actually taken the morning after the annual 4/20 pro-cannabis gathering in the park in April. (The Leeds/London confusion was likely caused because both parks have similar names and both had to deal with clean-up operations on the same day since the 4/20 gatherings happen across multiple cities on the same day.)
Despite those original claims being debunked, the photo is again spreading in order to make a claim that a pro-environmental protest resulted in significant littering, this time claiming it was the aftermath of a protest in the Queensland town of Clermont, which had recently seen protests against a proposed coal mine in the area.
The official Royal Parks Twitter feed subsequently confirmed it was Hyde Park in London and not the result of environmental protests.
