Does “Canine Coronavirus Vaccine” bottle prove vaccine cover up? Fact Check

A message online claims to show a “canine coronavirus vaccine” from 2001, proving that people have had a cure for the 2019 coronavirus pandemic for 19 years.

FALSE

The message comes attached to photos of bottles containing a label reading “canine coronavirus vaccine.” Examples can be seen below.

Now this was 2001 tell me why 19 years later they say there is no vaccine share before they take it down again

Can anyone explain to me why they made a Corona virus vaccine a year ago for K9s but are acting like this shit is a new virus that came from China just recently? If they have a vaccine for dogs, don’t u think they wud have one for humans too? Wtf is the government tryin to pull on us really?

The messages are another example of a number of online misinformation that demonstrate a fundamental lack of understanding of what coronavirus is, and as such as drawn entirely incorrect conclusions.

The term “coronavirus” refers to a family of viruses that have existed in humans, other mammals and birds for decades. This isn’t any sort of secret information – one can simply scan the Wikipedia entry for coronavirus [or better yet] see any reputable science based website (such as the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) for this information.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that usually cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses, like the common cold. However, three new coronaviruses have emerged from animal reservoirs over the past two decades to cause serious and widespread illness and death.

There are hundreds of coronaviruses, most of which circulate among such animals as pigs, camels, bats and cats. Sometimes those viruses jump to humans—called a spillover event—and can cause disease.

Despite being related, different strains of coronavirus are just that; different. They result in different symptoms and infect different species. For example, there are types of coronavirus that can infect mice (M-CoV), cats (FCoV) and birds (IBV). These are all differing types of coronavirus that science has known of for some time.

And of course, as per the false messages above, dogs can be infected as well (known as CCoV or CCV.) According to the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) “canine coronavirus” is a Canine coronavirus (CCV) is an enteric pathogen of dogs that is responsible for mild to severe diarrhea in pups”

Different types of coronavirus require different vaccines, since they result in different diseases. As such, a vaccine for “canine coronavirus” for dogs isn’t going to cure the 2019 strain of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) which results in the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19.)

The 2019 coronavirus strain is novel, meaning it has never been seen before, and as such at the time of writing there is no vaccine for it.

Simply pointing to other strains of coronavirus that have affected different species for a number of decades isn’t proof that a vaccine for 2019 coronavirus strain is being kept hidden by covert powers. It is simply a demonstration of a very fundamental lack of understanding of what coronavirus means.
