Does Coca Cola and Pepsi dissolve eggshell in 24 hours? Fact Check
A video apparently shows the bizzare effect on an egg when it is submerged in Coca Cola and Pepsi for 24 hours. The video appears to show the egg takes on a rubbery, translucent appearance when removed from the glass of carbonated drinks.
The implication of the video is that the Coca Cola/Pepsi mix fundamentally transforms the egg, dissolving its shell and hardening the egg white.
The video can be seen below and has had millions of views in only a few days.
However the video is fake. In reality it is quite clear that the video maker has simply replaced the egg with a rubber egg toy, which are freely available to purchase online (for example here.)
A number of people over the years have investigated the effects Coca Cola can have on an egg when left submerged, most notably to demonstrate the effects sugary drinks like Coke can have on the enamel of a tooth.
However in no experiments does Coca Cola completely dissolve the eggshell in only 24 hours, nor does it cause the innards of the egg to become translucent or rubbery.
As such, the video is a prank.
