Does photo show pro-EU protesters burning Union Flag? Fact Check

A photo appears to show a Union Flag being burned during a pro-EU protest.

FALSE

The photo appears to show a number of protestors holding pro-EU and anti-Brexit placards while someone holds a burning Union Flag at the foreground.

See below for an example of the image as it spread through social media.

The image, however, has been digitally altered. While the protest is genuine, the burning flag has been digitally added.

This isn’t the first time we’ve encountered digital pranksters adding burning flags to images on the Internet for the reasons of political propaganda, and given the increasing popularity and ease-of-use of digital manipulation software, it also won’t be the last.

For the record, the photo of the pro-EU protestors (and one anti-EU protestor) was taken in March 2019 outside Downing Street. The photo of the burning flag can be traced back to protests in Argentina during 2016.

We’ve included both original photos below.
