Does photo show seven marines killed near California? Fact Check
An images claims show the images of 7 marines who died after a training accident off the coast of Southern California on Thursday July 30th.
FALSE
As it appeared on social media is below.
After a routine exercise involving an amphibious assault vehicle (AAV) in the waters off California had gone wrong, one marine was pronounced dead at the scene and seven marines and one sailor are – at the time of writing – still missing presumed dead. Seven other marines were successfully rescued.
The image above claims to show the photos of the 7 US Marines who are missing presumed dead. However, the photo – that began to circulate social media before the identities of the marines had been confirmed – actually shows seven marines that were killed in 2015.
The men in the circulating photo were seven US marines that died in 2015 after their helicopter crashed in fog off the coast of Florida.
As such we don’t recommend circulating the photo claiming it shows marines who died after the training accident near California.
