Has the DOJ really labelled Antifa a terrorist group? Fact check
An article is spreading on social media that claims the DOJ (Department of Justice) has officially labelled Antifa as a terrorist group.
The article was published on the site thelastlineofdefense.org and claims Antifa – a movement claiming to promote anti-facsism – has been denounced by the DOJ as a hate group. The article reads in part –
It’s been a long time coming, but the fascists calling themselves an anti-fascist movement are finally labeled what they are by the Department of Justice: a hate group.
Recently, the Antifa terrorists have been storming free speech rallies to fight against…free speech. To date, 163 innocent people have been attacked, beaten, and subjected to horrible treatment from the “tolerant Left.”
“From this point on, each and every member of Antifa who attacks an innocent person will be charged with terroristic acts,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Tuesday. “This has gone on long enough.”
However the article is fake. There are no mainstream media reports confirming such an announcement, which they would be if the news was genuine. Additionally the story was originally published by a known fake news website. TheLastLineOfDefense.org has a long history of publishing fake news and is listed by our partner site ThatsFake.com as a fake news site.
As such, the story should not be circulated as true.
