These posts are just the latest in a series of scams designed at luring people into engaging with them and helping them spread virally across Facebook. It’s called like-farming, where spammers set up pages designed to exploit Facebook users through deception or manipulation into liking and sharing their posts.

The aim of these scams is to acquire as many followers for their Facebook pages as possible so they can later be targeted with other types of more profitable spam, or even scams like identity theft.

Sponsored Content. Continued below...

Those who comment on the post run the risk of being contacted by those behind the page and lured to a number of scams aimed at cheating them out of money. Those who follow the page will be exposed to other spammy Facebook posts.

We discuss like-farming is more detail here and explain the various disguises it can take. We also discuss this type of fake competition like-farming through this link here which we recommend giving a read if you haven’t already.

Remember, to avoid these scams, do not engage with Facebook pages that do not represent a actual brand of the product that is offered as a freebie. The Facebook pages in these cases are not marked with the blue verification tick, and a simple scroll down the pages reveals these pages have only been created days prior to posting these spammy “offers”.

Thanks for reading, we hope this article helped, but before you leave us for greener pastures, please help us out.

We're hoping to be totally ad-free by 2025 - after all, no one likes online adverts, and all they do is get in the way and slow everything down. But of course we still have fees and costs to pay, so please, please consider becoming a Facebook supporter! It costs only 0.99p (~$1.30) a month (you can stop at any time) and ensures we can still keep posting Cybersecurity themed content to help keep our communities safe and scam-free.
