Fact Check – Gerry and Kate McCann to do lie detector on Jeremy Kyle Show?

Rumours are spreading on social media that claim the parents of missing child Madeline McCann are set to do a lie detector test on The Jeremy Kyle Show.

The rumours assert that the popular UK talk show programme had managed to lure both Gerry and Kate McCann into doing a lie detector test (such tests are popular on The Jeremy Kyle Show) to prove their innocence regarding the disappearance of their daughter back in 2007 in Portugal.

Ever since the disappearance of Madeline McCann, many rumours and accusations have been directed at her parents, most popularly when they were given suspect status by the Portuguese police early in the investigation, that was later dropped.

The claim that Gerry and Kate McCann were to be made to do a lie detector test began with various “funny” Facebook pages and Internet memes across the Internet that can be traced back to at least 2011 that were clearly designed to be taken with more than a pinch of salt than to be taken seriously.

Since then various online petitions have been created by people who believe the pair were involved in her disappearance, requesting they undergo a test to prove their innocence. Most notably a 2017 Change.org petition from Ethan Taylor accrued many tens of thousands of votes at the time of writing.

On April 1st 2017 (April Fool’s Day, no less) The Morning Wood website – a spoof news website – penned a fake article that claimed the parents were to appear on the show. That article read in part –

TV has managed to organise one of the most awaited shows ever, after successfully luring Gerry and Kate McCann onto the primetime show, Jeremy Kyle.
The McCanns, who are famous for accidentally losing their daughter whilst out on the piss back in 2007, will do a lie detector test with the questions being around their daughter Madeleines disappearance.
In the ten years since their daughters d̶e̶a̶t̶h̶ disappearance, the McCanns have come under increasing pressure after draining nearly £10 million from the public purse. Culminating in a petition to have them participate in a public lie detector test, which gained over 150,000 signatures.

Later in 2017 the same article was circulated and published on other fake news websites including on the MeanwhileInBritain.com site.

There has never been any truth to this claim. There are no plans to make the parents of Madeline McCann do a lie detector test, much less on The Jeremy Kyle Show.
