Free trip to Fiji for liking a Facebook post? It’s a scam

A Facebook post purporting to offer free holiday to the Fiji Islands is a scam designed to lure visitors to spammy marketing webpages.

The post implores readers to share the post onto their timeline to win. The post claims the previous winner did not claim their prize to the free trip is up for grabs once more. You can see a copy of the post below.

Congratulations to our Fiji Islands holiday winner (Emily Rogers – USA) for 4 people. However this person has not replied in the given time [72 hours] to claim their prize so we’re giving away the holiday again. Just share if you’d like to travel to the Maldive Islands and stay in a luxurious underwater hotel room for free. Closes in 24 hours! Winners are messaged. Like our page for updates.

However the offer has nothing to do with any official holiday brand and the Facebook page that made the post – called Maldive Islands Holiays – is a like-farming page that posts these fake offers in order to lure people into liking the page. You can learn more about like-farming and how they work through this link here.

You can also learn about “share to win” type Facebook posts in our blog post here.

It is likely that the post will be updated to include a link to a spammy marketing webpage that is designed to harvest personal information of those people who visit it and target them with spam.

In this case the page that made the post is clearly a typical like-farming Facebook page. It was only created the day prior and only contains 2 posts. It also lacks the blue verification tick that Facebook gives to pages that are officially linked to a brand.

Remember that if you click these links and complete the surveys, you;ll be giving away your personal contact information to spammers. There is no free holiday to the Fiji Islands on offer here. It is just a scam.
