Has Darrell Brooks bail been set at $1000 after attack in Waukesha? Fact Check

Posts on social media claim that man identified as being the Waukesha parade attacker that killed five people has since been released on a $1000 bail bond. Such posts make the direct comparison that Kyle Rittenhouse’s bail was set at $2 million for shooting and killing two people.

FALSE

Posts on social media such as the one below claim that Darrell Brooks has had his bail set at $1000 after he killed five people [at the time of writing] during a parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

This guy plowed through a Christmas parade killing 5 people & injuring 40 & he out on bail for $1000 Teenager Kyle killed 2 felons who attacked him, in a self defense & had $2million bail & 2 months in prison. If you still buy into the “White Privilege” hoax you are a fool

What’s true? Rittenhouse bail bond was $2 million.

What’s false? Darrell Brooks had previously posted a $1000 bail weeks before he committed the attack during the Waukesha parade for previous criminal offenses. He has not been released on $1000 bail since the attacks, as many messages state or imply.

It is possible that such claims are either a deliberate or mistaken distortion of the truth. Wisconsin court filings show that Brooks had posted a $1000 bail for criminal offenses committed in early November 2021 that included resisting an officer, reckless endangerment (where he was alleged to have attempted to run over his partner and child) and disorderly conduct.

So while it is true that Brooks – who has a long list of prior criminal offenses – was released after posting a $1000 bail for previous offences, it is not true that this is what the bail was set to involving his actions at the Waukesha parade. Brooks is still in police custody at the time of writing, and his bail has been set at $5 million.

UPDATE: Article updated to add $5 million bail amount.
