Has Derek Chauvin committed suicide in jail? Fact Check

Online rumours claim that Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was arrested for the murder of George Floyd, has committed suicide in his jail cell.

FALSE

On May 31st 2020, a story on the website W24n.com published a story with the following headline –

Minneapolis Police Officer who killed George Floyd, Derek Chauvin commits suicide in prison cell

Soon the story spread to other websites purporting the same claim, with many turning to social media to question the veracity of the story.

However the story is false. The story claims that the announcement was made by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. However no such announcement was made. Additionally no announcement was made by the Minneapolis Police Department or any authorities in Minneapolis or Minnesota. As such, we rank the claim that Derek Chauvin committed suicide in jail as false.
