Inaccurate headlines claim LA City Council removing Trump’s Walk of Fame star

An article with the following headline “BREAKING: LA City Council Makes Final Decision To PERMANENTLY REMOVE Trump’s Walk Of Fame Star” is spreading online.

The article comes from the website ILoveMyFreedom.org but makes a number of incorrect claims and has a misleading headline.

While the article is based on a genuine developing story, the article and headline are incorrect.

Firstly, while a vote to remove Trump’s Walk of Fame star really did take place in August 2018, it wasn’t the LA City Council, as quoted in the article. It was the West Hollywood City Council. The two are separate entities, with the former controlling the city of Los Angeles and the latter controlling the city of West Hollywood.

Secondly, despite the headline, the council have not made a “final decision” to permanently remove Trump’s star, since it is not their decision to make. The Hollywood Walk of Fame is in Hollywood, which falls outside the city limits of West Hollywood.

The vote to remove the star by the West Hollywood City Council is a non-legal, non-binding resolution to request the removal of the star, directed at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which does have jurisdiction over the iconic California landmark. West Hollywood major John Duran tweeted

West Hollywood City council unanimously passes resolution asking the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to remove the Donald Trump star on Hollywood Walk of Fame.

However the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has – at the time of writing – made no such indication that they will remove Trump’s Walk of Fame star. No star has previously been removed from the landmark despite being the home to the stars of a number of controversial celebrities. As we write this article, it is more likely the star will stay put than be removed.

As such, a headline that claims the LA City Council has made a final decision to remove Trump’s Walk of Fame star is inaccurate and misleading.

Trump’s star has been the target of a number of acts of vandalism since he took office, including graffiti and more recently it has been defaced by a pickaxe.
