iPhone 6 scams in the wild. As predicted.
The imminent release of the always-much-anticipated latest model of the Apple iPhone, the iPhone 6 and 6 PLUS, has the usual slew of scammers waiting to dupe you.
And if last year’s release of the iPhone 5 is anything to go by, any frequent social media user is probably going to see some dubious posts regarding Apples latest phone some time soon.
Before the release of any hotly anticipated product like the iPhone 6, you will inevitably get the usual scams purporting to give away pre-release testing samples, like this case which we reported on back in January.
But in the week before and after the actual launch date the Internet & social media is plagued with a range of scams, from like-farming scams to survey spam. Basically, scammers are looking to cash in at the expense of social media users.
So what type of scams can you expect?
Very much similar in execution and planning to last year’s tricks, we would predict.
This includes your usual slew of Facebook Pages & Events, continually posting “giveaway” posts that you’ll need to like and comment to enter a contest to be a winner, only to then find out you need to share a webpage in a share-to-watch type scam, then complete survey scams that harvest your personal information, only to then find out there really isn’t any competition when it’s too late to do anything about it.
Like-farming spammers will use the iPhone as bait to accumulate followers for their pages, who can then be hit with scams at a later date or will simply sell off their Pages to marketing companies.
Social media links may also lure you to malicious websites that will attempt to install malware onto your computer by luring you into downloading files under the assertion that you need to install it to be in with a chance of claiming your prize.
Spam email and pop-ups notifying you that you have “won” an iPhone will be more popular than ever right now, which again will lead to either survey spam or malware downloads.
And with the recent announcement of the very first model of the Apple Watch, due to be released in early 2015, it looks like these scammers will have more bait in the very near future trick even more victims.
So remember to be on the watch out for any suspicious activity online regarding the latest iPhone. Only enter contests or competitions you know to be legitimate, and if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.
