Network of fake news websites targets Roy Moore and Alabama

A network of fake news sites with the same owner has been keeping itself busy with a number of fake stories about the special Senate election in Alabama in 2017.

The controversial and – at times – bitter nature of the election between republican Roy Moore and democrat Doug Jones has made it a popular target for those in the business of publishing spoof news articles.

And one network of fake news websites, a network that includes the domains ReaganWasRight.com and TheLastLineOfDefense.online, has published dozens of nonsense articles during the months surrounding the election, many of which have become incredibly viral.

As such, with this article we separate fact from fiction.

What has happened…

Roy Moore and Doug Jones competed with each other in a special Senate election on December 12th 2017 to fill an empty Senate seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. During that campaign, Moore was accused – though at the time of writing neither charged nor convicted – of sexual assault by several women.

The election campaign was won by democrat Doug Jones by just over 20,000 votes.

Roy Moore refused to concede the election, and claimed he was waiting for the postal votes to be counted. Once it was confirmed the postal votes hadn’t altered the outcome, Moore subsequently filed a complaint with the Alabama courts alleging potential voter fraud.

However with no evidence of voter fraud, the Alabama courts denied the election complaint and Doug Jones was soon certified as the winner of the election, due to officially become a Senator after being sworn in in January.

What hasn’t happened…

Below are a list of fake news headlines that have been circulated by a network of fake news websites determined to confuse and trick readers.

‘Thousands’ voted for Doug Jones in Alabama town with population of 2,256.

This fake story claimed a town of 2,256 managed to somehow cast over 5000 votes, vastly in favour of Doug Jones. Variations of this rumour identified the town as Bordalama, while others kept the town name unidentified.

The story was originally published by fake news website LadiesofLiberty.net, which has a disclaimer claiming its stories aren’t real. There is no town of Bordalama, and the claim that a town in Alabama managed to cast votes totalling double its population was investigated and dismissed.
