Internet Hoaxes

No, that creepy robot walking up driveway video is NOT real

A video of a human-like robot walking up a driveway is spreading virally across social media, which has attracted plenty of queries as to whether the video is real or the result of digital trickery.

The video was given plenty of attention when it was tweeted by TV illusionist Derren Brown. You can see the video below.

Despite many presumably tongue-in-cheeck comments about this being the sign of a robot uprising, the video is most definitely not real, though admittedly looks super realistic.

In reality, it’s all digital effects. Specifically, the robot video was created using a real-time graphics rendering engine called Unity, which allows designers and programmers to [more] easily create short videos for testing, demonstrations etc.

The robot in the video here was taken from a series of short filmed titled Adam, films that were directed by South African director Neill Blomkamp and produced by Oats Studios. You can watch that series on YouTube here where you can see the same robot.

Both director Neill Blomkamp and the Unity development team have confirmed that the video is the result of digital wizardry, that was rendered by the demonstration team.

So despite the video freaking out plenty of people on social media, we can all rest assured that the robot uprising isn’t coming. At least not just yet.
