This elongated warning is actually several different hoax warnings stitched together, many of which have been circulated since around 2010. While we won’t go into too much detail on this blog post, (we’ve covered it elsewhere on this site a number of times) to quickly surmise, no, WhatsApp is not charging you to use their service, and obviously this means you cannot escape a fee (that doesn’t exist) by forwarding an arbitrary message onto your friends. After all, what would be the point?

The notion that a particular online service is “full” or is about to charge users, and to keep your account both active and free is a long running hoax that dates back to the days of classic chain email urban legends. After targeting services like Hotmail, Yahoo and AIM, it has most popularly taken to fooling Facebook users.
Please stop sharing these silly messages. On a sidenote however, it is true that Facebook has acquired WhatsApp (albeit back in 2014) and the pair do share data about users with each other.
