“Past Life Analysis” spam app goes viral on Facebook

Links that claim to provide your “past life analysis” are the result of a spammy Facebook app that lures those who install it to spammy marketing websites.

We’re warning our readers of another rogue Facebook app that lures people into installing it by purporting to provide their past life analysis. An example post can be seen below –

My past life analysis says i was born in 1774, lived for 81years and had 4 children. Get your past life analysis done at URL removed.

Upon installing the app (called Rainbow in the instance we encountered), it attempts to do two things –

1. Asks for permission to install itself on your account as well as permission to post from your account. If granted, the app posts the same spammy link from your account so your friends can see it.
2. Directs you to spammy marketing webpages to “unlock” your results. However this is just used as bait to lure visitors into signing up to third party marketing websites that harvest your personal information and targets you with spam.

The app doesn’t appear to ask for much of your personal information (just your public profile information including your name and profile picture) meaning it is likely that the end-game for the spammers is simply to lure users to third party marketing websites.

It’s a very basic rogue Facebook app, and it highlights how many Facebook users are still willing to install dodgy Facebook apps from unknown and untrusted developers for a few moments of “entertainment”.

Read our article here on why you should think twice about installing these sorts of apps on your Facebook account.
