Photo of people praying at Erawan Shrine bomb site taken before explosion

An image (above) claiming to show hundreds praying at the bomb site at the Erawan Shrine, Bangkok, where dozens of people were killed in an explosion on August 7th 2015 is spreading across the Internet, including on Facebook, Twitter and Reddit.

Captions that are provided alongside the image claim that the praying was in response to the devastating attack. Many captions assert the image was taken “yesterday”.

Below are a few examples –

The day after the Hindu shrine bombing in central Bangkok which killed 20 people, thousands of Buddhist monks and clergy from Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Islam pray for peace.

Yesterday’s bomb site in Bangkok. Now a different energy.

However, the image was not taken after the attack happened. In fact it dates back to September 2013, 2 years before the attack occurred. It shows the morning Alms Round of hundreds of Buddhist monks in Thailand. They are situated on Rajaprasong Junction, next to the Erawan Shrine where the explosion took place.

You can see further photos of the gathering on the website.
