Police release video of CLOP ransomware gang members getting raided in Ukraine

Authorities in the Ukraine have released a five-minute video of various members of the CLOP ransomware gang getting the justice they no doubt richly deserve as police raid their homes.

The CLOP ransomware gang has been operating since 2019 and have been linked to a number of high-profile ransomware and extortionware attacks, namely against South Korean companies and pharmaceutical companies, as well as the attack on technology company Accellion.

However after a joint operation involving police from the Ukraine, South Korea the United States, six people have been arrested during 21 searches in Kyiv.

Not only that but around $200,000 cash was seized as well as computer equipment and several cars including a Tesla and a Mercedes.

And in true Ukrainian Law Enforcement style, the raids were videoed and uploaded to YouTube where you can see (below) police breaking down a door, accessing various properties, seizing cash and cars as well as reading some dazzled suspects their legal rights (albeit not in English.)

It is not clear the nature of the involvement those arrested had with the CLOP ransomware gang’s activities. It’s not likely that they are the core ransomware developers themselves. What’s more likely is that they are people who have been recruited to either assist with the money laundering side of the operation or to perform more administrative operations (yes, even cybercriminal enterprises have to do their admin!)

But it’s another good example of international law enforcement joining forces to go after these bad guys. The threat of ransomware and extortionware has grown ten-fold over the last few years with crooks attacking loftier targets and ransom payments increasing.

And it’s important that the authorities are capable of working with each other across borders to track these criminals down and make sure they face justice.

Only weeks ago the US Department of Justice announced they had seized much of the money that was paid out by the operators of the Colonial Pipeline after it was held to ransom in May 2021, affecting oil supplies to much of the US east coast.

And if you want to watch a bunch of ransomware criminals get their comeuppance, the video showing various members of the CLOP ransomware gang facing the long arm of the law is below.

Enjoy.
