Prank article claims Facebook was down after being hit by North Korean missile

A fake news slash prank website has an interesting explanation as to why Facebook was down earlier on today, claiming the “main server” had been hit by a stray North Korean missile.

The website 8sh*t.net invites its readers to share their own “news stories” that invariably turn out to be either fake news or prank stories designed to fool readers.

And after Facebook went down for a number of hours due to what is being described as a glitch, someone on the site purported that the North Korean state was to blame. The fake article read in part –

Prineville, Oregon.— North Korea launched another missile, but this time it accidentally hit Facebook main server in Oregon. Users are having trouble using Facebook today due to this small incident.
“We had a tiny problem and we’re trying to fix it”, stated Facebook spokesman in a press conference. He would have said it on Facebook, but it’s down.
Several parts of Facebook are working, because that information is located in different data centers. According to user reports, Messenger, notifications and the news feed aren’t working.
The U.S President Donald Trump hasn’t stated anything yet, he’s probably at lunch and will say something when he’s done.

The fake article was shared a number of times on social media, but we expect (hope) that those sharing it understood the story wasn’t meant to be taken seriously.
