Rumour claims cargo container containing women spotted in Savannah

A rumour is spreading across social media that claims a cargo container containing young black women in the port of Savannah in Georgia about to be shipped overseas was spotted but the mainstream media refused to report on the incident.

The rumour can be seen below as how it appeared on Facebook –

3/21/17 Why is mainstream media NOT talking about the cargo container full of young black women found at the port in Savannah, Georgia that was about to be shipped overseas!? Who’s covering this up? Are our young women being stolen from us and sold for sex trafficking? #Copy& #Paste until we get answers!

The message doesn’t provide any further details, such as who saw the cargo container, what they did after seeing it, and why they didn’t contact the authorities upon seeing it (or how the authorities responded if it was indeed reported.)

The message just claims – without sources – that a cargo container was spotted, and then questions why this unfounded message wasn’t being reported by the media.

An Internet search reveals that local media have reported on the matter, at least in the context of the social media rumour. Savannah news outlet WSAV3 claim they have spoken to both the Department of Homeland Security and the president of SWAHT (Savannah Working Against Human Trafficking) who assert the social media rumour is “unsubstantiated”.

“What we can currently say is that none of the claims have been substantiated by any government agency or any credible industry on this matter” said SWAHT president Deidre Harrison.
