“The video French police don’t want you to see” not from France

A video is spreading across social media that claims to show police brutality in France after one semi-unconscious man is continually beaten by passing riot police officers.

The video is spreading primarily across Facebook, along with the caption

El video que la policía francesa no quiere que veas.

Which translated into English reads –

The video that the French police don’t want you to see.

Given the captions, the implication in the video is that it depicts police brutality in France during the Euro 2016 football tournament which has seen plenty of street violence against police and football supporters in its first week.

However, given that many instances of this year are over a year old – with one of the more popular examples uploaded on June 7th (Euro 2016 kicked off on June 10th) it is clear that this has nothing to do with the football tournament.

In fact the footage was taken in the Ukraine back in 2014 during the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution which involved a number of violent confrontations between riot police and protesters. The footage in the video also featured in the docu-movie ”Winter on Fire; Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom”

Thus circulation of the video with a caption implying the footage was taken in France is certainly not recommended.
