Scams that involve criminals pretending to be computer technicians whilst cold-calling victims and tricking them into installing malware is a popular con that is several years old.
Whilst most can spot this crime easily, this type of scam (much like 419 Nigerian fraud) will typically prey on the vulnerable.
Despite being a widespread scam, criminals are rarely caught, largely down to the fact that they operate out of countries in Asia or Africa.
Which is why the conviction of Mohammed Khalid Jamil comes as some welcome news. Despite hiring callers from India to trick victims into handing over control of their computers, the UK eCrime team followed a money trail leading to the UK. Luton, to be exact.
Mohammed Khalid Jamil was arrested and fined over £23,000 in total, including victim compensation and court fees, but many are claiming his 1 year suspended sentence was not harsh enough, arguing that this type of crime should warrant an immediate custodial sentence.
The gang he operated managed to turnover an estimated £1 million+ a year.
“This is a landmark case, as we believe it may be the first ever successful ¬prosecution of someone involved in the Microsoft scam in the UK.” said Lord Toby Harris, chairman of the National Trading Standards Board.
Always be aware of people cold calling you that tell you that something is wrong with your computer. This is a type of crime that is after control of your computer, and probably your credit card information too!
