Internet Hoaxes

Does a video show a trailer for an upcoming “Friends the Movie”? Fact Check

A video showing the cast of popular US comedy Friends is spreading online, along with the claim that it is a trailer for a “Friends Reunited” episode or an upcoming “Friends the Movie“.

One popular example shared on Facebook claims it is a trailer for “Friends the Movie” due for release in April 2018.

The video features a number of scenes featuring the famous 6-piece cast, including a scene where Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe) is a doctor, a scene with Matthew Perry (Chandler) and Courtney Cox (Monica) speaking after a car accident and Matt Le Blanc (Joey) and David Schwimmer (Ross) bumping into each other at a party. The video closes with the caption “Friends Reunited”.

However, the trailer isn’t real. The Internet has often been the conduit for spreading fake rumours about a possible Friends reunion series or movie, but these have so far not come into fruition.

In fact this trailer is merely a compilation of scenes from other unrelated television shows. For example the scene with Matthew Perry and Courtney Cox on the street is an episode of Cougar Town during a cameo performance by Perry. The same applies to the scene where Lisa Kudrow appears as a doctor.

The scene where David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc meet at a party is from an episode of Episodes, as is the scene with LeBlanc at a police station.

The video appears to have been originally posted by YouTube channel “Smasher” as a ‘concept’ video, not a real trailer. However others have taken the video and reposted it to social media claiming it to be a genuine trailer. As such, this isn’t a trailer for a reunion series or movie for Friends. Sorry!
