Watch out for Aldi £40 voucher scam spreading on Facebook

A spate of spammy links are spreading across Facebook that claim supermarket Aldi is giving away £40.00 vouchers to those that click the link.

The links may appear in your Facebook newsfeed and may have been posted by your Facebook friends. The links claim that Aldi is giving away £40 vouchers to everyone.

However this is a typical marketing scam designed to trick users into visiting spammy marketing websites that want your personal contact information so they can bombard your mobile phone and email with spam.

The links lead to spammy websites – on at least one occasion we were forwarded to the website aldi-services.uk.com – that force visitors to share the webpage to their own newsfeed before they can claim their voucher.

However once Facebook users have shared the page, they are forwarded to spammy “programs” that are designed to harvest their personal information. The chances of winning anything are slim (or non-existant) and there are no £40 Aldi vouchers on offer. However by the time the Facebook user realises this, it’s too late and they’ve given away their information and shared the link on their Facebook newsfeed for their friends to see (and click!)

Needless to say, none of these websites are affiliated with Aldi.

This is a typical giveaway scam on Facebook, and we’ve seen thousands over the years targeted different companies. It is important for users to NOT click these links, and NEVER share them on your own timeline. If you do, delete them before your friends click them too.

Stick to promotions and giveaways that are orchestrated from the official social media pages and websites of the companies in question. A quick search reveals that the official website of Aldi is Aldi.co.uk, and not the websites that these spammy links are leading to.
