Will Frozen’s Elsa be portrayed as gay in upcoming movie? Fact Check

Rumours online claim that Disney character Elsa will be portrayed as gay during the upcoming sequel to the Frozen franchise.

FALSE

A number of different rumours have claimed that Disney and Disney’s creative chief officer Jennifer Lee have confirmed that Frozen’s main character Elsa will be gay in the new Frozen movie, including the rumours below.

For the first time in forever, Disney will feature an openly lesbian protagonist. We are proud to announce that Elsa will be a lesbian in the much awaited sequel, Frozen 2!

However such claims are false and have been dismissed by those working on the new movie. Additionally the above screenshot of the tweet by Disney is fake. (A similarly fake Disney tweet also spread claiming Woody from Toy Story would be bisexual.)

While much speculation has been spreading online regarding Elsa’s sexuality in upcoming movies, including a GiveElsaAGirlfriend hashtag spreading in 2016, it had never been confirmed by Disney nor anyone working on the movie franchise that Elsa would indeed be portrayed as gay.

And in 2019, such speculation was essentially put to rest when lead lyricist Kristen Anderson-Lopez told IGN that they would not be exploring that side of the character in this 2019 movie.

Like the first movie, Elsa is not just defined by a romantic interest. There are so many movies that define a woman by her romantic interests. That’s not a story that we wanted to tell at this time.

It’s true however that co-director Jennifer Lee has appeared open to the idea, especially in 2016 when the above mentioned Twitter hashtags were spreading virally, so it is of course possible that it could happen in the future. But for now, rumours that it has been confirmed that Elsa will be portrayed as gay are false.
